Headspace recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Sam Phillips of new Manchester tenants Residently to discuss a typical working day, managing expectations and the favourite part of his role.

Q) Describe your organization?

Resident.ly is a startup in the property space, removing friction and wasted time for both tenants and landlords

Q) Describe a typical day in your work life?

Our Manchester team is focused on product and engineering, so we work in an agile way with a morning standup to discuss the state of play and then we crack on with building some product!

Q) Are there any challenges in your job and how do you handle them?

As with all tech startups our big challenge is building a great team - hiring good people, giving them interesting work and helping them grow into a group that works well together. We handle it by hiring carefully and being constantly attentive! As a startup all of our team have a big stake in making our business a success.

Q) What are the top 3 things you do outside of work?

I play piano, cook and am slowly learning Italian.

Q) What advice would you give someone who is seeking the same line of work?

Find good co-founders and a business area that you're passionate about!

Q) What is the favourite part of your day?

I'm a social person so I enjoy our morning standup and of course our weekly Show & Tell with the whole company (we're across London and Manchester) where we demo what we've built and learned in the last week.

Q) What are the most important tools, programmes and systems you use for your work?

Just a computer and a keyboard :)

Q) Finish this sentence: The ideal way to start my day is…

With a seat on the tram!

Q) What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Seeing the things people achieve when I'm not involved

Q) What is the least favourite part of your job?

Interviewing is a necessary evil, but it's time-consuming. We're constantly trying to figure out better ways to handle hiring.

Q) What is your favourite sport?

Formula one

Q) Do you have a favourite guilty pleasure song?

I wouldn't call it a "guilty pleasure" but I'm currently enjoying Dua Lipa's stuff. My favourite record of all time is "Million Dollar Bill" by Middle Brother; my favourite classical piece is Shostakovich, Two Pieces (Op. 11)

Q) What would you like to win a lifetime supply of?

Pizza

Q) If you could choose anyone to be your parents, who would you pick?

My parents, of course! Although I could have had Tom Selleck as a daft (if overly earnest) uncle.

Thank you Sam, great chatting with you and we wish Residently a huge amount of success throughout this year.
