#HeadspaceStories in 1 minute and 59 seconds: Matt Simpson of LeftMedia
Headspace recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Matt Simpson of LeftMedia, we talked about challenges, expectations and a little about himself.
Hello Matt, please tell me more about LeftMedia and your role?
At LeftMedia we help businesses, particularly established manufacturers, achieve their growth targets through marketing and branding. I'm the Client Director, so I spend a lot of time meeting and talking to clients to really understand their businesses so we can find the best ways to help them realise their goals. As we're a small team, I'm also heavily involved in coming up with creative ideas and helping to ensure that they happen.
Are there any challenges in your job and how do you handle them?
It can sometimes be a challenge convincing people of the value of marketing and design, as they think a few tweets and some plonking text on a page (I blame The Apprentice tv show for this perception of design) is all that's involved. It's a challenge I love though, as all I need to do is show them the results we've helped clients realise - such as the £1million of additional revenue we achieved for a client in just 5 months - and they're convinced!
What are the top 3 things you do outside of work?
Creating typography based artwork, cooking & eating (that counts as one doesn't it?) and a new entry in the top three is researching and viewing narrowboats as I'd quite like to buy one soon! So if you know of anyone looking to sell a cruiser stern narrowboat with a reverse layout let me know....
What advise would you give someone who is seeking the same line of work?
Don't undervalue what you to, work with people who appreciate what you do, find inspiration in books, visit exhibitions, find other creative people and work with them, and find a niche and become the best at it.
What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?
That people on the telly could see you when you were watching them, though not if it was a film, because that would just be silly, right? Some of my former colleagues in my previous career in broadcasting would argue that my technical understanding of television never really moved on from this belief....If you would like to hear more stories or to sell your narrow boat, please folllow Matt on Twitter : @leftmatt or Instagram @nothernletters.
